A project to create the world’s largest airport terminal. A series of key technologies were proposed during the design to realise a fantastic architectural effect. These included a supporting system mainly composed of C-shaped columns, seismic-isolation system of a gigantic planar structure, and vibration control techniques for the high-speed railway passing through the terminal.

The challenging structural design of this terminal megastructure required careful consideration of the unique architectural shape, the vast building dimensions, the impact of the high-speed railway passing through and its location in a high-intensity seismic zone.
The project demonstrates very large and complex forms. An arch-shell structural system was used for the free-form roof of the centre zone. Eight C-shape supporting columns provide the primary support and are organically integrated with the roof structure.
To ensure the terminal building would remain operational and structurally safe under a severe earthquake, a seismic isolation system uniting both base and interlayer isolation technology is employed. This outstanding feature means the terminal is the world’s largest seismic isolated building, setting a new benchmark for seismic isolation technology.
