PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Cove Manila is a 100m span and 30m high steel dome, supporting 8,570m² of glass panels. It is the main feature of the Okada Manila resort, an integrated entertainment resort offering breathtaking views of Manila Bay. 650 tonnes of steel was used in the construction of the dome, including connections.

Judge's comment:

The engineers of the Cove Manila roof showed great awareness of the need for visual clarity in designing a 100m diameter glazed dome and adopted a clever hierarchy of structural steel elements that provided a simple but strong logic for a roof structure, free from unnecessary elements, and a display of structural reduction of the first order. To achieve this clarity and a remarkably lightweight, and therefore efficient, roof structure in the extremely testing conditions of high seismicity and winds that Manila is prone to, while supporting large glazed panels sensitive to movement, is a real testament to the assurance and deftness of touch of the design engineers.
