PROJECT DESCRIPTION

An innovative use of concrete solutions during the remediation of an 1880’s sandstone heritage cottage. The project involved excavation depths of 10m. A 5m cantilever floor plate was hung from curving off-form concrete walls acting as curved deep beams, with large voids in the back-span. The project stayed sensitive to heritage while achieving sustainability objectives.

Judge's comment:

This residential design and construction project demonstrates a comprehensive design utilising the whole structure to create a functional home.

The engineers overcame several complex challenges; remediation and strengthening of the distressed harbour front sandstone sea wall and the design called for a maximum floor thickness zone of 450mm (including finishes) to achieve a 5m cantilever that supported slender, two-storey high curving walls. The northern wall geometry resembled an ‘S’ shape and required substantial engineering judgement and justification to prove the structural adequacy and robustness of the proposal.

Design of finishing items such as a steel helical stair, off form concrete benches and steel framed windows help create this highly unique, durable and aesthetic concrete new build.
