PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A free-form canopy created using parametric design and new digital fabrication methods. A highlight is the digitally fabricated crown made of 380 timber elements. This project champions new digital planning and construction methods. It shows how they can be used to create unconventional shapes in construction projects. It also shows how they can minimise resource usage and construction waste.

Judge's comment:

The innovative canopy of this elegant doubly curved outdoor pavilion is the result of an efficient use of timber, 3D software and seamless collaboration.
 
The systematic use of parametric design and planning methods, in combination with new digital fabrication methods made it possible to optimise functionality whilst minimising the use of resources and construction waste. 

This successful pilot project demonstrates the potential of new digital planning and fabrication methods on a cost-efficient basis with improved sustainability. In an intensive collaboration process, all project participants experienced how an integral, digital design-to-assembly process changes the way architects, engineers and manufacturing companies work together.
