The effortless and natural design of Apple Aventura’s structure and undulating vaulted roof, inspired by Miami’s Art Deco buildings, was achieved through the integration of several complex systems.
Made solely from precast elements, its 24m long concrete beams span 18m between slender steel columns clad with a concrete casing. Between the beams, 6m wide concrete arches span to form a barrel-vaulted ceiling, which is covered by a white fabric on the underside for acoustic attenuation.
A highly refined level of detail was achieved throughout the project by carefully considering all interfaces from first principles, and through a collaborative and open process. As such, the innovative design of the roof is enhanced by details such as the interfaces of column head to beam connection, and the novel system that was used for the column precast concrete cladding which enabled horizontal installation and replacement of the panels.
