This project is the total transformation of a 1920’s Grade II listed building, originally a cinema, from a fire damaged shell to a high specification commercial space.
The construction works were extensive and included demolition of the existing reinforced concrete frame, the formation of a deep, waterproof basement, and the construction of a new 7-storey steel structure within the retained shell of the grade II* listed terracotta façade.
The original structure created deliberately dark internal spaces, aligned to its purpose as a single screen cinema. The key to unlocking the transformation and creating desirable spaces over the lowest three floors was to address this issue and the structural team worked closely with the client and architect to generate natural daylight gains from all available opportunities.
The finished building stands as a testament to the part skilled structural engineering can play in transforming and reusing existing built assets.
