PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A new infill roof bringing Waterloo and Waterloo International Stations together to form a new single 24 platform railway station. With a live environment beneath, close collaboration with the client and stakeholder groups was critical.

Judge's comment:

The redevelopment of Waterloo Station integrated the International Terminal with the original domestic station complex and upgraded both the number and capacity of existing platforms.

The design team were presented with considerable challenges, not only in terms of budgetary constraints but also due to the complex nature of the existing infrastructure.

The glazed infill roof between the iconic International Terminal and main concourse was designed to shed its load pattern in such a way as to reutilise existing foundations without the need for problematic new piling within the constricted infrastructure of tunnels and service ducts. It was also designed to be built in sections sufficiently small to be erected by mobile crane.

Increased pedestrian access as well as track remodelling and lengthening were achieved through clever temporary works design such as tying the feet of the International Terminal roof, and optimisation of track and platform configuration to reduce to a minimum any strengthening of the existing structures and creation of additional foundations.

The overall scheme resulted in considerable savings in terms of budget, time and disruption.
