PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A beautifully slender 40m stainless-steel road bridge, the first in the UK. The single span arch bridge has many elegant design aspects. The reinforced concrete deck and arch is connected to a stainless-steel structure with spandrels at 90º to axis of the arch. Stainless-steel was used for its whole-life-cost, maintenance free, higher strength and aesthetics over carbon fibre.

Judge's comment:

Pooley Bridge is the UK’s first stainless steel road bridge. The client wanted a future-proof bridge that was flood resilient and complied with Environment Agency regulations to replace the previous bridge, a beloved listed stone structure destroyed by Storm Desmond.

The result is a beautifully slender 40m-span open-spandrel arch bridge. An innovative composite stainless-steel and high strength concrete structure that emerges from local sandstone-clad reinforced concrete gravity abutments.  The single clear span minimises the impact on the local environment and flood risk.

Overall, an elegantly detailed contemporary take on an arch bridge.
