PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A 23225m2 state-of-the-art office development inside a now Grade II listed building. A strategic decision to retain the existing building avoided the need for demolition and rebuild. This and detailed engineering design saved approximately 12,000 tonnes of embodied carbon.

Judge's comment:

This commercial office project demonstrates a clear understanding of the strong environmental, cultural, financial and programme incentives for effective building reuse.

The structural team were instrumental in minimising the amount of modifications required to the building, undertaking detailed surveys and structural analysis to justify the capacity of the existing structure. They demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by utilising carbon calculations to guide the design from an early stage.

The engineers  worked with the strengths of the existing frame, and exposed high quality, but previously hidden, original structural detailing. The result is a desirable modern workplace.

The strategic decisions made to avoid demolition saved 7,900 tonnes of embodied carbon in the structure alone, and significantly more across the whole building.
