This award from fibUK showcases how structural concrete is used in design or construction to produce efficient solutions.


Design a poster describing your interesting application of concrete and how it solved a design or construction problem.

Judges will consider both new applications and familiar applications executed to a high standard.

Entries might include:

  • Project technical innovations
  • Developing or exploiting new construction techniques
  • Producing highly optimised designs
  • Examples of overcoming complex design challenges

Entries may relate to:

  • Buildings, civil engineering or research
  • Large or small projects
  • Research - ongoing or related to construction works underway or completed in the last 24 months
  • Design - ongoing or related to construction works underway or completed in the last 24 months
  • Assessment works - underway or completed within the last 24 months
  • Construction works - underway or completed within the last 24 months
  • Issues of design, use, assessment or the properties of concrete, within the structures, or as a construction material
  • Topics such as concrete’s flexibility in form, strength, range of applications, design approach, versatility or any other interesting aspect


Judging criteria:

  • Relevancy of subject matter to improving professional practice
  • Useful and relevant information
Judges will welcome entries demonstrating solutions that contribute to global challenges such as: reducing the consumption of natural resources, addressing climate change and improving the resilience of our infrastructure.

Judges will not provide feedback to applicants.

How to enter

Submit a poster as a PDF file: one A2 or two sheets of A3, with a maximum file size of 20MB.

Your poster should include:
  • Title (encapsulating your solution)
  • Your name
  • A short statement describing your design/construction project or research question
  • Text/sketches/photos/key details explaining the interesting aspects of the solution and its use of concrete

More information

  • Applications should be submitted by individuals only; team submissions will not be accepted
  • Entries from students/undergraduates will not be accepted
  • Winning posters will be published on and at fibUK events
  • Winners will be required to supply details to set up Young Engineer Subscription to fib international
