Pai Lin Li ETM

This event is fully booked

The Pai Lin Li Travel Award provides grants to those adventurous structural engineers who are keen to sample the practise of structural engineering on an international scale.

Certainly unlike your average steelwork/timber/footbridge seminar, one of this year’s winners Sebastian Kaminski, will deliver a presentation discussing ‘Engineered bamboo houses for low-income communities in Latin America’.
Sebastian’s presentation will provide insight from both a structural and a sociological perspective whilst also detailing specific case studies in Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador and drawing his own experiences on projects in El Salvador.

The presentation on 10 October provides a good opportunity to meet clients, construction industry colleagues and people in government, as well as the author of the paper being presented. We hope that it will also unlock a little inspiration for some more voyaging structural engineers.

IABSE Workshop: Guidelines for Design Competitions for Bridges

IABSE has published ‘Guidelines for Design Competitions for Bridges’ completed by an IABSE Working Group. These are the first international guidelines available to assist clients and procurement agencies wishing to hold a bridge design competition.

These guidelines are written specifically for projects in which a bridge is the main element of infrastructure but can also include related items, such as the approaches to the bridge and its landscaping. The guidelines provide a framework to procure a bridge project successfully via a design competition route.

The workshop will consist of four presentations, beginning with a review of design competitions before exploring an architect’s perspective. The workshop will conclude with an interactive session on the guidelines where audience participation is welcomed.

Speakers include Cezary Bednarski (Studio Bednarski), Brian Duguid (Mott Macdonald), Naeem Hussain (Arup), Martin Knight (Knight Architects), and Emeritus Professor David Nethercot, President elect of IABSE.

It will discuss the ways in which structural concepts are taught at the University of Manchester and will share teaching resources by providing slides for the teaching of structural concepts. The seminar is supported by the Higher Education Academy and is free to attend.

The aim of the seminar is to share good teaching practice and teaching resources. The seminar will show and provide three one-hour lectures to guide and stimulate students to learn and to use structural concepts through producing individual pieces of coursework. Our learning resource is provided in the website, www.structuralconcepts.org, in which many physical models and practical examples are provided, some developed by students, to enhance the understanding of structural concepts and to demonstrate the use of structural concepts.

These provide students with sufficient materials and background for them to study structural concepts at their own pace, reducing the time needed to cover this material in formal lectures. A collection of students’ work on the use of structural concepts forms a further learning resource available to all students, allowing them to learn from each other, and will be shown in the seminar.

Wood Awards ‘roadshow’ - The Hive, Worcester & The Stowe Gardens Visitor Centre

Two new dates have been added to TRADA’s Wood Awards ‘roadshow’, the much-anticipated series of site talks and visits to some of the award-winning and shortlisted projects from 2012.

Having already visited the 2012 Gold Award winner, the Hurlingham Club, in Fulham, the two new stops will take in The Hive, Worcester, on April 22nd and The Stowe Gardens Visitor Centre on May 16th.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the Hive is an integrated public/university library including county archives, a local history centre and the county’s archaeology service. The roof of the Hive is arguably one of the most outstanding timber structures to have been completed in the UK so far.

Comprising seven independent pyramid-shaped roofs, the span of the biggest roof exceeds 25m and required the development of a new unique system combining glue-laminated timber beams and cross-laminated timber panels. Iain Williams, of architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, will talk guests through the design challenges.

Meanwhile, Adrian Small from Cowper Griffith Architects will explain the brief and designs behind The Stowe Garden’s Visitor Centre, which features a number of timber buildings, the main one being the restaurant and its triangulated ‘dia-grid’ roof structure made of a series of linked timber triangles connected by stainless steel flitch plates and tie rods.

Challenges In Designing Against Extreme Events

In the pursuit of economical and safe methods of extraction of hydrocarbons from the oceans, the offshore industry continually pushes the boundaries of known technology. This often requires a ‘first principles’ engineering approach, challenging the status quo and involving the skill sets of a number of inter-related disciplines. For all approaches that fall outside ‘the norm’, the challenge is to recognise where current codes of practice may not be appropriate and then to identify and understand all relevant ‘limit states’ of failure, thereby developing a robust solution with acceptable risk.

For example, the familiar 100-year design environmental load (with safety factor) for an offshore structure may not be a suitable design parameter if the environmental force increases rapidly with small changes in return period – as is the case if an extreme wave were to hit the platform superstructure – and therefore demonstration of risk must consider loads induced by return periods of the order of 10,000 years to adequately capture the failure probability.

For interfield flowlines, increasing well pressures and temperatures require innovative solutions if one is to avoid having a very thick pipe. Indeed elastic design is usually not economical and non‑linear plastic design solutions involving controlled lateral buckling and large strains are the norm, while solutions that consider probabilistic ‘no burst’ design have also been employed.

The presentation tonight will highlight some of the challenges that the speaker has faced in both structural and pipeline offshore engineering and illustrate the pitfalls of blindly applying codes of practice.

This presentation will discuss many technical risks related to durability of concrete structure assets in various stages of projects and to suggest potential mitigation measures. There are two key technical requirements for these assets, i.e. serviceability and durability. Unlike serviceability, durability has been often compromised during these stages leading to a shorter service life and a higher operation cost.

This presentation will be usable for all stakeholders of concrete structure assets including engineers and managers from asset owners/buyers, designers, contractors and operators, who should be concerned the performance and/or value of these assets. It can help them to avoid associated technical risks and consequential financial risk.

Conceptual Design or the Art of Structural Engineering

The Institution of Structural Engineers and The Society of Engineers UAE invite you to this jointly organised evening presentation.

This presentation will explore the creative side of engineering, it will showcase some of the amazing engineering feats of the modern era and the thought process which made them possible. It has as central theme the art of conceptual design, which is of particular relevance given Dubai's ambitions to host the Expo in 2020 and will be of interest to engineers and architects alike.

The presentation will focus in part on the works of Peter Rice, a structural engineer considered by many to be amongst the greatest of the post-industrial age. His work redefined standards and his ability to turn a 'what if' into reality made such projects as the Sydney Opera House, Pompidou Centre, Lloyds Building and the Louvre Pyramid possible. Peter's belief that the engineer's role is to be the facilitator to great architecture, resulted in close collaborations with Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, I.M. PEI and Bernard Tschumi, but it is probably his partnership with Renzo Piano that gave rise to his most innovative work.

About the Speaker:

Matthew J. Esther is a Chartered Engineer with over 16 years experience in the design and construction of a range of building types that include tall buildings, geometrically complex structures, long span structures and stadia. He specialises in the design of steel structures and has a passion for architecture and conceptual design.

Matthew has been an active member of the UAE Regional Group of the Institution of Structural Engineers since its inception and has served in various capacities, including as Chairman in 2011. He is the organiser and principal lecturer for the Chartered Membership Exam Preparation Course in the UAE and lectures regularly at Herriot Watt University.

Wind Engineering “Making the Transition to EN1991-1-4”

On the 30th March 2010, BS6399-2 was withdrawn and replaced by EN1991-1-4 (together with the UK’s National Annex). Feedback received to date would suggest that adoption of this Eurocode is slower than expected.

The UK is different to much of mainland Europe in that it is difficult to get more than 50 miles from the sea! This is reflected in the characteristics of our wind and is particularly important for the design and assessment of tall structures. BS6399-2 recognised this and used a fetch dependent model, generating transitional wind speed and turbulence profiles.

Conversely, the wind model in EN1991-1-4 uses a series of discrete equilibrium wind speed profiles. This was viewed as a retrograde step and so the UK National Annex to EN1991-1-4 sought to reinstate the transitional model in BS6399-2 (within the constraints of nationally determined parameters!).

John will present a comparison of BS6399-2 and EN1991-1-4 and demonstrate how the UK has managed to retain much of what was already in BS6399-2. He will also show how to navigate through the Eurocode and UK NA to derive design wind pressures.

Attendees will be asked to share their experiences of using EN1991-1-4 and it is hoped this will lead to a lively and informative debate.”
