This paper considers the inplane stability of regular and irregular multibay portal frames. The methodology is directed towards estimates of the elastic critical load which give an indication of the significance of inplane instability whether the frame is designed on an elastic or plastic basis. Simple expressions for the practical estimation of the elastic critical load are given for a range of situations, including both the external and internal bays of multibay frames, portal frames supported on valley beams or props, and tied portals. In each case, the proposed expression is justified by comparison with exact analysis for a range of practical cases. Professor J.M. Davies
The Chairman I am delighted to see so many people here tonight. We often have a full meeting room but we have excelled tonight and there is obviously a very real interest in this subject. I was thinking of asking how many were here out of purely academic interest and how many were trying to pick up some tips for the future, but in the event I shall not embarrass any of you by asking that question. It is an important subject and I am looking forward to a lively and wide-ranging discussion about all those things that are important to you as individuals.
Professor A. Bolton (F) (formerly, Heriot-Watt University) I read this paper with great interest because it presents much data of value to practising engineers. The experimental work was carried out after careful thought and preparation, and the results are offered in a form which can be applied directly to other structures. The extreme difficulty of carrying out full-size tests of this kind on practical structures is not always appreciated but such a paper is then read and used by many more than would read the formal solution of a theoretical problem. The work of Professor Bryan and his colleagues at Salford University, Dr. Morris at Manchester, and Dr. Cunningham, which are listed in the references of Dr. Robertson’s paper, are of this same useful kind.
