Sometime over the weekend of 7 and 8 March 1987, part of the charging ramp to the famous Darby furnace at Coalbrookdale collapsed. Subsequent investigations revealed that other parts of the structure were also very unstable, and they were temporarily shored. R. Dixon
The airport at Eastleigh, Southampton, is one of the largest established airports on the south coast. It is particularly well served with surface transport links: Southampton is 5 miles to the south; the M27 motorway is within a mile and the rail station, within 50 miles of the Passenger Terminal, making it possible to get to London Waterloo in less than an hour. Professor F.W. Williams (F) (University of Wales, Cardiff) The authors’ advocacy of the use of the curve length method in finite element analysis is most interesting and they have kindly called attention to the writer’s previous use of this method to obtain analytical solutions4. The writer’s solutions included experimental comparisons for a spaceframe dome as well as two toggles. The object of this correspondence is to comment briefly, to try to improve the authors’ already excellent use of one of the writer’s toggles, as the basis of all their comparisons of results.
