Project Description

This incredibly complex brief called for a 55,000 seat stadium suitable for showcasing athletics events at the London 2012 Olympics, whilst providing the theatre for the opening and closing ceremonies and then, following the completion of the games, to provide a 25,000 seat stadium for East London in its permanent mode. Careful consideration of this brief and the relevant constraints has resulted in something quite spectacular. The elegant exposed truss joints, the insistence on repeatability, the ingenious roof, the concern for the many different aspects of the construction and, above all, the shear economy in terms of form and finance makes the London 2012 Olympic Stadium an exemplar of the genre.

Judge’s comments

"Every Olympic Stadium must evoke the spirit of the Games it serves. By combining an in depth understanding of the structural engineering requirements and possibilities with close attention to the practicalities of steelwork fabrication and erection, the deceptively simple 2012 Stadium delivers precisely what was requested."
