Highway or Railway Bridge Structures

Project Description

By cutting the deck of this bridge diagonally to create two triangular sections, this dramatic lifting bridge creates the impression of two passing yacht sails when open. Its unique form brought with it many technical challenges, which have been successfully overcome by the designer. Referencing Poole’s maritime heritage, the bridge provides an elegant landmark that will support significant regeneration.

Judge’s comments

"The judges were impressed by the bridge’s original design of the opening leaves of the central span. The gap between these leaves was skilfully measured and cut to create two triangular sections. The resulting impression of two passing yacht sails when lifted demonstrates why the bridge achieved its status as a dramatic landmark."
