Judge’s comments

This technically challenging project preserved, restored and transformed an 11th century monument to provide a new perspective on a site of historical significance.

Carefully considered structural engineering influenced the client brief and architecture; deriving maximum benefit from minimal intervention and a minimal use of material. Only a highly trained team of engineers with advanced investigative skills and knowledge of historical materials and techniques, could have ensured it was brought to fruition.

The new timber structure offers an elegant improvement to public experience and has resulted in a dramatic increase in visitors.
