Project Description

Serving as the main venue of the Asian Beach Games, this stadium has a construction area of 86,000 m2 and seats up to 45,000. This design, particularly of the roof, had to carefully consider the location of the stadium in which severe typhoons land frequently. In this project, the CFRP cable and high-strength cast steel G10MnMoV6-3 are used for the first time in large-scale spatial structures to achieve a lightweight structural design.

Judge’s comments

This stadium boasts an exemplar lightweight cable roof design. 

The inner roof structure has a 45m cantilever span and a convex spoke-wheel cable truss structure which offers greater stiffness than that of a concave cable truss. The unique design was adopted in response to the extreme weather and typhoons the region encounters.  

The outer roof is highly integrated into the architectural shape and forms a horizontal truss structure supported by a series of hinged columns, which, at the same time provides a robust supporting system for the inner roof structure.
