awarded for raising the standard for retrofit and façade retention at scale

Project Description

A landmark restoration project that has transformed an iconic London industrial building into a vibrant 21st century destination. The team implemented elegant, buildable engineering solutions to carry out extensive repairs and remedial works to the existing façade. A new structure has been created within the existing building, serving as contemporary accommodation, shops and hospitality outlets.

Judge’s comments

The retrofit of such a complex derelict structure required careful planning, inspection and testing of the existing foundation and structural frame. The existing foundations and structure have been strengthened and retained where possible, while featuring excellent construction detailing to satisfy current building codes and to meet the new buildings requirements.
