Having laid derelict for 25 years, this retrofit project has seen the transformation of a decaying former school building into a welcoming, versatile vibrant community hub, featuring a café, office spaces and event and meeting spaces.
This thorough refurbishment project is an excellent example of the contribution structural engineering can make to retain a building that might have been easier to demolish.
As part of the restoration, the engineers developed elegant engineering solutions, both in the main supporting structure and cladding system, and applied advanced conservation strategies to preserve as much of the original building fabric as possible.
This included treating timber rot, installing cathodic protection to concrete encased steelwork and reinforced concrete elements, and reconstructing lost areas of brickwork.
