Project Description

This 90,000 seat FIFA compliant stadium is one of the largest in the Middle East and Africa. The cable-stayed roof structure is eye-catching and makes use of modular steel components. This reduces embodied carbon compared to other locally available materials and promotes circular economy principles. The stadium acted as a catalyst for skills development, providing employment for around 15,000 people in the delivery of a large, complex stadium structure.

Judge’s comments

This super stadium has a lightweight and interesting cable supported roof structure. Collaboration across disciplines and with local and international firms was a key part in the success of project delivery. The hoisting of the entire cable roof suspension structure in one “big lift”, made possible by appropriate modelling during the design, helped reduce construction time and risks. The project contribution to the local economy is significant, and the commitment of the team in promoting local skills development was notable.
