The reimagination of a 1970s theatre as a dynamic cultural hub, retaining and strengthening the original auditorium and flytower while expanding capacity. The refurbishment comprised a new extension with a café, bar, three-screen cinema, hireable spaces, and a studio theatre. It integrated cross laminated timber cinema screens, a concrete first floor for acoustic separation, and steel structures for a balcony and technical level.
A thoughtful reuse-first transformation that breathes new life into a dated theatre while reducing environmental impact. By retaining and strengthening the main auditorium, trusses, and flytower, and introducing a timber box-in-box system, the team minimised new material use while meeting modern acoustic and performance requirements. Long-span structures over the River Lea were achieved without scaffolding, while a biodiversity-friendly walkway enhances the riverside setting. The result is a revitalised civic asset that balances buildability, acoustic performance, and environmental responsibility.
