Project description

A once in a lifetime upgrade to one of New Zealand’s most iconic locations, the development includes a new visitor centre, Department of Conservation office, community meeting spaces, an immersive exhibition, and transport upgrades. Engineered timber buildings integrate with the natural environment while addressing the challenges of a high-volume visitor destination. Balancing innovative architecture, ecological responsibility, and cultural significance, the project enriches the visitor experience while preserving a treasured landscape.

Judge’s comments

A welcoming community and education space where structural design and sustainability work hand in hand. Using demountable foundations, repeated elements, and a timber-first approach, the project minimises resource use while showcasing its exposed structure as part of the learning experience. Close collaboration with contractors ensured tight control of budgets and environmental impact, making the building both a local asset and a model for thoughtful, low-impact design.
