Project description

The transformative redevelopment of the former Kai Tak Airport site into Hong Kong’s largest integrated sports and entertainment complex. At its centre, the 50,000-seat stadium designed as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ houses the world’s largest acoustically sealed retractable roof. This engineering feat enables the venue to host concerts and sporting events in any weather, ensuring versatility while mitigating potential impacts on the surrounding neighbourhood.

Judge’s comments

A major sporting venue in Hong Kong, delivered through a process that balanced structural ambition with construction efficiency. The design features two large-span retractable roof systems, supported by 182m orthogonal trusses, engineered for safety and durability in a city prone to heavy rain and typhoons. Innovative foundation solutions, wind tunnel testing, and a decoupled build sequence enabled precise, rapid assembly, while digital delivery ensured quality control. Beyond its engineering achievements, the stadium is designed as a community-focused venue with lasting social and economic impact.
