Project description

The transformation of a 1980s administration centre into a four-storey hub for law and philosophy education. Through adaptive reuse, the original heavy structure was replaced with a lighter timber frame and glazed façade. A naturally ventilated, top-lit atrium, once an underused courtyard, now connects indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. With refurbished lecture theatres, flexible learning areas, and striking features, it fosters openness, interaction, and innovation across all levels.

Judge’s comments

A thoughtful and imaginative transformation project that combines the reuse of existing foundations and lower superstructure with the introduction of a new mass timber frame above. Through a methodical and well-executed adaptive reuse strategy, the project team avoided demolition, delivered innovative structural integration, and created a beautiful, uplifting space for its users.
