Project description

The redevelopment of the Old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh transforms the historic surgical buildings into the Edinburgh Futures Institute for the University of Edinburgh. Much of the original structure has been retained, with new structural and building services carefully integrated into the heritage fabric. The project was a highly collaborative process from inception to completion, uniting the team in realising the client’s vision for a welcoming space that fosters collaboration, innovation, and interaction while preserving the building’s character for future generations.

Judge’s comments

A transformative redevelopment that preserves the historic character of a deteriorating building, while adapting it for collaborative research and education. The project’s scale and complexity demanded the precise integration of new structure and services within the existing fabric, creating generous, usable spaces. An excellent example of conservation-led engineering, combining heritage value with social purpose to deliver a welcoming and enduring academic environment.
