Project description

The goal of the reconstruction of the stadium was to host 68,000 spectators for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. The project introduced a 3D seismic isolation system within the roof structure and used bent rebar-induced joints to improve concrete crack resistance. Engineering methods also supported carbon reduction, including assessing the likelihood of structural failure of elements to accelerate demolition.

Judge’s comments

A complex reconstruction that combines traditional and modern methods to create a role model for stadium design in high-intensity earthquake zones. The 205m span canopy was engineered to resist high seismic loads using a 3D seismic isolation system and heuristic optimisation, supported by careful detailing and innovative connection design. Over 95% of demolition materials were reused, and cement–soil piles were adopted to minimise community impact, resulting in a technically rigorous redevelopment recognised across industry and academia.
