This project at the historic Boston Lodge site on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF). It provides additional space to tell the story of the railway, host workshops that keep the railway running, support staff and enable volunteer and local community activities. The site, located within a former quarry, has served as the railway’s engineering works for 200 years.
This heritage refurbishment demonstrates how structural engineering can generate meaningful social value alongside conservation outcomes. Through extensive involvement of volunteers, apprentices and local contractors, the engineering solutions were shaped to support both the conservation of an important heritage asset and the people who will continue to care for it. By prioritising local skills, materials and supply chains, the project has created opportunities that extend well beyond the construction phase. The project shows how engineering can make a positive community impact and preserve important heritage.
