Built in 1931 and opened on ANZAC Day in 1932, this National Historic Landmark underwent seismic strengthening to 100% New Building Standard (NBS, IL3) while addressing widespread corrosion and preserving its heritage character. Replacing an earlier post tensioned concrete wall strengthening scheme, the bespoke retrofit solution was engineered to match the structure's natural deflection profile while preserving its acoustic properties.
This sensitive strengthening project demonstrates how structural interventions can improve resilience while respecting heritage significance. Rather than introducing an entirely new structural system, the design carefully enhanced the performance of the existing fabric through targeted and tailored measures. A restrained approach preserved both the tower’s historic character and acoustic qualities while addressing seismic and durability concerns. A great showcase of engineering judgement and sympathetic adaptation.
