The structural retrofit of Grade II listed buildings in Nottingham transformed former office space into a modern university campus. The works included the replacement of a highly complex tensile fabric roof. The project demonstrates a considered approach to the reuse of complex and sensitive historic buildings.
This project exemplifies a thoughtful ‘build less’ approach to structural engineering. The judges noted the rigorous assessment of existing assets, which enabled most of the structure and foundations to be retained, while selectively targeting interventions where they delivered the greatest benefit. Embodied carbon considerations played a central role in decision-making throughout the project. The result is a highly sustainable refurbishment that extends the life of a complex group of historic buildings and demonstrates the importance of engineering restraint.
