Project description

This stage canopy uses a two support, inclined arch cable net reciprocal structural system, representing the first application of this approach. Using full parametric design and integrated design and construction approaches, the project addresses multiple technical challenges while achieving carbon emission reduction targets. The design integrates with the surrounding environment and community, supporting Chengdu's ambition to become an international music capital.

Judge’s comments

Achieving such a visually refined structure depended on a rigorous and carefully executed engineering process. The inventive arch and cable system was developed through detailed analysis, parametric modelling, testing and controlled construction, resulting in an elegant and lightweight roof over a large public space. The judges recognised the quality of the engineering behind the project, demonstrating how strong technical fundamentals and thoughtful design can combine to deliver an exceptional structural solution.
