Project description

This 305m suspension bridge spans the Danube Valley without the need for pylons, using the surrounding granite cliffs to anchor its main cables directly into the landscape. A key structural challenge was developing an efficient load path while minimising the bridge's visual and environmental impact within a sensitive river corridor. The solution reduced material demand by eliminating conventional tower structures and relied on precise engineering of the cable anchorage and installation systems. Construction also required the controlled lifting and positioning of large steel sections from the river below.

Judge’s comments

An elegant response to a highly complex engineering challenge. By anchoring suspension cables directly into the surrounding granite cliffs, the need for pylons and river supports was eliminated. The judges praised the way the design worked with the natural landscape to reduce material consumption, minimise environmental impact and maintain river navigation during construction. The project combines technical innovation, precise construction methods and high-quality detailing to deliver a lightweight structure that demonstrates the value of context-led design.
