Project description

This multimodal crossing in Drammen, Norway, brought together two clients, two designers and two contractors to deliver a steel-concrete composite structure spanning the river and railway. The design responds to complex constraints, including poor ground conditions, ice loads and tight geometry, through deep piled foundations, design coordination and advanced parametric modelling.

Judge’s comments

This elegant bridge demonstrates the value of collaboration, parametric design and construction integration. The judges were particularly impressed by the way digital modelling informed both the design and delivery processes, improving efficiency and buildability. The structure successfully connects communities while accommodating complex site constraints, including rail infrastructure, poor ground conditions and river crossings. Careful coordination between multiple stakeholders resulted in a seamless and well-resolved solution that combines technical excellence with significant public benefit.
