This live-site vertical extension provides new offices and facilities for an enlarged legislature while maintaining uninterrupted operations. The solution combines lightweight steel Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), transfer girders and performance-based seismic design. This created additional capacity with minimal disruption and carbon.
This vertical extension shows how significant new capacity can be created within a dense urban environment while maintaining uninterrupted building operations. Judges recognised the innovative use of MiC, lightweight steel solutions and transfer structures to minimise impacts on the existing building. The project demonstrates the potential of extending rather than replacing assets, reducing resource use and disruption. As the first application of several techniques in its location, it provides a valuable model for future urban adaptation projects.
