The ambitious transformation of a long abandoned industrial landmark in Digbeth, Birmingham, has created a sophisticated broadcast and workplace environment for the BBC. The project brings new life to the century old Typhoo factory, which had stood largely derelict for decades, repurposing it into approximately 7,800m2 of studio, office and support accommodation for around 700 staff. In doing so, it preserves a vital piece of Birmingham's industrial identity while meeting the rigorous technical, acoustic and servicing demands of modern broadcasting.
By transforming a long-abandoned industrial building into a modern broadcasting facility, this project demonstrates the potential of large-scale adaptive reuse. Judges recognised the retention of much of the original structure and the engineering effort required to integrate new performance, acoustic and servicing requirements. Sustainability measures, targeted strengthening and close collaboration supported the successful delivery of the scheme. The project highlights the growing importance of refurbishment in extending the useful life of existing building stock.
