Project description

This project overcomes extreme structural challenges, including high seismicity, a 1/9.5 shallow arch and glulam's low tensile strength, to realise the biomimetic "Green Seedling" design. Using a "rocking column + diagonal tie rod" lateral system, general arrangement (GA) form-finding and concealed dowel connections, it achieves a 36m column-free span. The project also integrates rainwater harvesting and sequesters 1,065 tonnes of CO2. Together, these features demonstrate an innovative approach to large-span timber structures with a strong focus on structural efficiency and environmental performance.

Judge’s comments

Renewable materials are used to great effect throughout, with timber forming the primary structural material in an attractive and carefully resolved design. The judges recognised the extensive use of timber and the low reported embodied carbon associated with the material choice, while also valuing the quality of the structural detailing. It demonstrates how informed material selection can make a significant contribution to more sustainable engineering.
