Forming part of the wider Southern Campus redevelopment at Winchester College, the new swimming pool pavilion is enclosed by a distinctive folded roof comprising ten interlocking Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels with a clear span of more than 21m. Achieving the complex geometry entirely in CLT required close collaboration and intricate detailing between the architect, structural engineer and timber fabricator.

The judges recognised the simplicity and clarity of the structural concept, in which the timber panels contribute directly to the load-bearing system and architectural expression. Close collaboration between architect, engineer and fabricator enabled the complex geometry to be realised through careful detailing. The result is a visually distinctive and materially efficient enclosure that demonstrates both the potential and challenges of timber for long-span applications.
