This research, education and training facility comprises two new buildings within the site of the Grade I listed cathedral. The structural design achieves complex curved roof geometries using repeatable glulam components and layered plywood, leverages the existing masonry and incorporates salvaged steel. Foundations were carefully designed to protect significant archaeology located just two metres below ground across the site.
A practical, low carbon and well resolved development that supports the long term stewardship of an internationally significant heritage asset. The judges were particularly impressed by the successful reuse of existing structures, efficient use of timber and steel, and careful protection of archaeological remains. Equally impressive was the collaborative approach between engineers, suppliers and contractors, who successfully balanced budget, conservation, archaeological constraints and design intent throughout the project.
