Winner 2015

Award for
Pedestrian Bridges

Project Description

This winning design for a footbridge across the Grand Union Canal is the focal point of the new Merchant Square development. The simple and spectacular design sees a three meter wide cantilevered deck raised on hydraulic jacks with an action similar to a traditional Japanese hand fan. Due to limited site access, the bridge fingers had to be floated in on a barge, a tribute to the Canal’s original use. The bridge will be opened at least once a week to coincide with the routine opening of the nearby “Rolling Bridge”, creating a distinctive piece of visual theatre.

Judge’s comments

The judges admired the striking design, which merges efficiency with a uniquely elegant lifting pattern. The stunning aesthetic detailing merges the bridge delicately into its surroundings. This bridge is a dramatic piece of engineering which offers excitement for the area in which it is built.
