Winner 2023

Award for
diligence and rigour in maximising reuse

Project Description

A complex development in the heart of a conservation area in Westminster, London and consisting of three buildings; the refurbishment of an existing grade II listed building, a smaller building to be retained and refurbished and Millbank Quarter, a 10-storey building to replace an existing office building. The engineering team were able to reuse existing foundations on both buildings, making significant carbon savings.

Judge’s comments

The team fully embraced the circular economy approach by reusing and repurposing all of the existing 9 Millbank building instead of just retaining the façade. They respected, retained and reused ground structures of historical engineering significance including the superstructure and power station substructure, documenting these for generations to come.

Thorough research yielded impactful outcomes. The project team have demonstrated excellence in research and site investigation which minimised risks, reduced costs, reduced programme and deliver a more sustainable approach.
