This large development project modernised performance and public spaces within one of New York’s most famous cultural landmarks. Sensitive and surgical interventions were made to the existing fabric to extend and refurbish the spaces while preserving their historic character and improving acoustic performance. The project includes the creation of a state-of-the-art theatre that is home to the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
This is an impressive and well-executed example of refreshing and altering a 1960s structure to suit modern requirements with some fantastic, intricate engineering solutions that significantly extend the building’s life.
Major interventions were made to reconfigure the main concert hall layout, improving acoustics and audience experience. The team cleverly managed changes to load paths through the structure, both installing new elements and strengthening existing ones. The careful sequencing of interventions, including the application of post-tensioning to control movements, was expertly handled.
