Project Description

A redevelopment project transforming an existing disused city-centre building to a modern retail outlet. The project required a series of structural interventions including significant modifications to the existing internal layout. A new atrium staircase was created to open visibility and facilitate a walking route, synonymous with the IKEA shopping experience.

Judge’s comments

After exploring a range of options for tackling the challenging brief, the team implemented clever structural engineering solutions to facilitate this ambitious re-purposing project. Residential dwellings above made the removal of internal walls particularly challenging, which was remedied by the engineers installing new structural supports before their removal.

The structural design process and skill of the engineers has unlocked the redevelopment of a site at the heart of its local community, breathing new life into the high street whilst avoiding the social disruption and carbon impact of knocking down or constructing new buildings.
