With mounting pressure on structural engineers to deliver complex, efficient and cost-effective designs to tight deadlines, the need for a risk-based approach and proactive strategies is critical. At every stage in the Plan of Works, there are actions structural engineers can take to reduce errors, minimise risk, and improve safety.
At this conference leading experts will explore the drivers for change, while presenters share actionable strategies for avoiding common errors, mitigating risk and improving structural safety. View conference programme
Risk-based approaches – the drivers for adoption
Why the industry must build a safety culture to safeguard structural integrity
Mitigating risks in the design-build contract
Strategies for balancing the sometimes-conflicting demands of efficiency, speed and safety in design-build agreements
Preventing technical risk and avoiding errors across the Plan of Works
Proven methodologies for identifying and mitigating potential design risks; and
Gain insight from deep dives into some frequent errors and how to eliminate them through robust quality control.
As a former military helicopter pilot and aviation risk specialist, Emily brings fresh perspectives on risk management to the built environment. With experience spanning civil aviation, defence, nuclear and maritime sectors, she focuses on adapting effective risk management approaches across industries. Now developing an innovative building safety case solution, Emily serves on the IMechE ALARP working group and advises IStructE on building safety guidance aligned with BSA22 requirements.
Alex has over 25 year’s experience working in structural engineering, with over 10 years spent designing buildings in various countries around the world. Since joining Cundall in 2016, he has delivered numerous net zero or low carbon schemes and is an advocate of decarbonising structural design solutions through material selection, efficient design and the repurposing of existing buildings. He also lead the engineering design on the Circular Twin project that was awarded the AJ100 Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award in 2022.
Charlotte is an award-winning Structural Engineer who has passion for a holistic design approach and ensuring project teams are supported to truly collaborate and deliver. Now working for a Main Contractor, her extensive experience across various sectors has given her a rounded and in-depth knowledge of construction. She bridges the gap between the consultants and operation teams/the supply chain to ensure that projects run smoothly with minimal surprises at stage five works.
Keith is the Design and Technical Quality Director for Ramboll’s UK Structures division. With over 30 years of design experience on UK and international building projects, he leads their Design Quality Panel with the aim of continual improvement in all aspects of design and technical delivery of structural engineering projects. As a Project Director at Ramboll and previously Arup, he has led multi-disciplinary engineering teams ensuring the successful delivery of projects from £5m to over £500m construction cost.
Paul is a Chartered Structural Engineer with 30 years of experience as a consulting engineer and project manager within the building sector. He is responsible for the overall management of CROSS and works closely with the various stakeholders and Expert Panels. He shares their passion to ensure that knowledge is shared, best practice is adopted, and safety lessons learned are promoted across the industry.
Steve is the global Building Retrofit Leader at Arup and is passionate about existing buildings. He has worked on many high-profile retrofit projects. He studied Architecture and Structural Engineering and has worked in many different offices at Arup. Steve has been a speaker at various national and international events and has written numerous technical papers on retrofit for the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers as well as co-authoring the IStructE book Circular economy and reuse: guidance for designers which was published in 2023.

This course delivers key advice and guidance on seismic design of structures to Eurocode 8 as well as the application of the Eurocode. Emphasis is placed on reinforced concrete buildings although the concepts are widely applicable.
This two-day, online course introduces seismic design of civil engineering structures. It builds on the basics of structural dynamics and engineering seismology. The course focuses on seismic loading and design codes, conceptual seismic design principles and analysis for seismic loading, and design and detailing of structural members.
Bringing together the next generation of construction leaders, this conference explores the future of structural engineering, emphasising collaboration and the use of digital tools.
The fourth in a series of online technical lectures on the Building Safety Act, arranged by the South East regional group for all. This technical lecture focuses on safety case reports and structural risk assessments for higher risk buildings (HRBs)
This course is designed to provide structural engineers with a greater understanding of fire safety, key legislation, and the principles of risk analysis in order to ensure that adequate structural performance in fire is achieved. You will examine case studies of structural and non-structural failures as a result of fire.
Assessing and strengthening Large panel systems for safer, compliant structures.
Practical, hands-on workshops led by digital engineering practitioners and experts.
This course delivers practical advice through the use of worked examples on dynamic analysis, conceptual design for earthquake resistance and seismic design of structural elements to Eurocode 8. Emphasis is placed on concrete and steel buildings although the concepts are widely applicable.
This course equips practicing engineers to undertake the full structural design of a building, including designing a robust building to avoid disproportionate collapse.
