This sponsored forum by IDEA StatiCa explores a new approach to cast-in plate design, followed by discussion and networking with fellow structural engineers.

Cast-in plates connect structural steelwork to reinforced concrete, yet assessing the complete connection can be challenging. Designers must consider the behaviour of the steel plate, welds, anchors, concrete and reinforcement, often drawing on separate calculations and provisions from several standards.

This workshop, hosted by IDEA StatiCa UK, introduces a numerical workflow linking steel connection analysis with reinforced concrete analysis. Through practical examples, it explores how engineers can assess the connection and its load path, including configurations that are difficult to address using conventional calculation methods alone.

The event combines a two-hour technical workshop with a networking reception, providing opportunities to discuss design challenges, exchange experience and meet engineers working on similar applications.

Reasons to attend

  • Identify the principal design challenges associated with cast-in plates and the interaction between their components

  • Explain how Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM) and Compatible Stress Field Method (CSFM) are used within the linked workflow

  • Understand how forces are transferred from the steel connection into the concrete and reinforcement

  • Recognise modelling considerations for anchor arrangements, reinforcement and connection geometry

  • Interpret analysis results and identify the checks and engineering judgements required to support a design

  • Understand how the workflow relates to the separation of steel and concrete design responsibilities recommended in SCI P416

Intended for

  • Consulting engineers working on buildings and infrastructure

  • Engineers responsible for steel connections, anchorage and reinforced concrete design

  • Technical leads and design managers reviewing complex connection details

  • Engineers seeking to understand the practical application of numerical analysis to cast-in plate design
