A talk showcasing a range of projects on how structural repairs can be considered for application within historical environs.

Conservation is best enabled by keeping buildings in use.  Doing the least to our built heritage requires decisions borne out of a deep understanding of structures.

This session provides an insight into some of the practical applications of conservation engineering.  The talk uses a collection of past projects to describe how conclusions were made about when to intervene for the purposes of investigation and specifying appropriate repairs.  The talk is aimed at structural engineers and designers who are interested in applying pragmatic approaches to structural repairs in historic environments using various materials, components and techniques.

Speaker

Daniel Wallington MIStructE

Daniel Wallington BEng(Hons) CEng MIStructE is an associate director of structural engineering at AECOM and an engineer accredited in conservation with CARE. CARE is the Conservation Accreditation Register for Engineers, which is jointly administered by the ICE and IStructE, and has a bilateral registration agreement with Engineers Ireland. Dan has a wide range of experience in the survey, investigation, repair and development of existing structures, particularly those with heritage significance. Dan’s keen interest and understanding of existing construction enables him to apply his skills to keeping buildings alive; understanding and maintaining what is of value in terms of a building’s cultural, historical and material qualities.
