DEAR SIR,-I was somewhat surprised to read the letter published in the current issue of The Structural Engineer from Mr. Arthur H. Douglas.
General. The study of foundations is a particularly interesting one, the interest, I think, being largely due to the fact that owing to the greater complexity of the factors involved, foundation engineering has not yet been reduced to such an exact science as some other branches of engineering. Gisborne, the North Island coastal port, in the early days known as Turanganui, stands on the mouth of the Turanganui River. This is a short stretch of tidal water which forks, a few chains to the left of the traffic bridge at the left of Figure 1, into two rivers, the Waimata and the Taruheru. Royden H. Newman
