SIR,-I have read with interest Mr. A. H. Jenkins’ letter in your June issue, and in replying to the questions raised by him, I reiterate the warning contained in the opening remarks of the above paper, that any advice given must be subject to the particular contract conditions containing nothing to the contrary.

THE CHAIRMAN (Mr. S. B. Donkin) , President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, in opening the meeting, said it was his privilege in the first instance to express the pleasure of the Institution of Civil Engineers to take part in a joint meeting with the British Section of the Societe des Ingenieurs Civils de France and the Institution of Structural Engineers and to hear a paper by M. Brice. In case some of those present were not aware of it, M. Brice was a Lecturer at the Ecole Centrale, Paris, and was also a Graduate of the Ecole Centrale. In addition, he was partner in the famous engineering firm of Sainrapt et Brice, of Paris. The Chairman added that M. Brice had asked that his colleague, M. de Jarny, should read the paper.

REFERENCE is made in the Paper to the Concrete Pile-driving Specification of the Institution, and in particular it is stated that the Special Test-Pile described is a development of the form recommended in the Specification. Gower B.R. Pimm

The general equations for the bending moment, horizontal thrust and shear force at the crown of a hingeless arch due to angular and linear movements of the abutment are obtained from strain-energy considerations. It is shown that all the quantities can be stated in terms of four variable parameters, for which nomograms are drawn for the case of the parabolic arch. An example is given, and the application of the nomograms to the solution of the arch equations for external loads and temperature changes is also indicated. R.J. Cornish
