The devastation of the world war swept over the capital of Hungary and the fury of the enemy deprived the " Queen of the Danube " of all her beautiful and world famous bridges, which are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the siege of the city ended about the middle of February, 1945, and the tortured inhabitants could creep out from beneath the
ruins of their homes, the capital was cut in two, because the most simple means of communication were in ruins.

Aluminium Alloys; Their Properties and Some of Their Applications to Structures

There has recently been published in The Structural Engineer two papers concerned directly with aluminium alloys. One of these contains an account of the production and properties of aluminum alloys by H. K. Hardy, followed by some considerations of structural use with examples of weight saving, by C. G. Watson. The other, by D. V. Pike, contains an account of some existing aluminium alloy structures and considerable information related to design and weight saving. G. Forrest and F.R.C. Smith
