Between 1929 and 1936 a comprehensive investigation of the behaviour of steel structures was made for the Steel Structures Research Committee. A summary of the work is given together with a short account of the Design Recommendations made. This design method was not popular and the conclusion was reached that the elastic behaviour of a redundant structure is too complicated to form the basis of a simpler rational method. An investigation of the behaviour of structures in the plastic range up to collapse was therefore begun in the hope that a more acceptable rational method of design would result. Professor J.F. The President - 1949 -1950

The President of the Institution for the Session 1949-1950 who will take office on the 13th October, is a Consulting Engineer who, although a London member for many years, came originally from the Midlands. Mr. Leslie Turner was born in Birmingham on the 28th October, 1891, and was educated at George Dixon School and Birmingham University, where, as Fentham Scholar, he completed the course in Civil Engineering in 1912. He gained his early experience in the municipal service as an assistant engineer to the Southend-on-Sea Corporation at a time when much sea work and general extension were in progress. Subsequently,he joined the Indented Bar and Concrete Engineering Company, Limited, in Westminster, returning later to his native city for a short period with Mr. Harry Jackson, Consulting Engineer.
