Crane gantry girders are particularly important in steelworks cranes, and experience shows that there is scope for improvement in the girder design. An endeavour has accordingly been made in this paper to show how improved design and resulting economy can be achieved by closer adherence to fundamental theory and to the best practice. J.S.
