The problem of brittle fracture in mild steel, which is normally regarded as a ductile material, has been with engineers for many years, whether they have realised it or not. A recent review by M. E. Shank cited cases as far back as 1886, and many other cases are reported in the engineering literature. A still greater number have probably not been reported publicly.

Gasholder Development and Design

GASHOLDERS date back to the days of A. V. Lavoisier when in about 1781, he invented a laboratory instrument consisting of an inverted bell which was free to rise and fall in a tank of water. Gas was stored under the bell and over the water, and as the rise of the bell could be calibrated to indicate the volume of gas, we have the origin of the word “Gasometer.” W.R. Garrett
